Regulating bodies of the Tanzania Spices label

As a Tanzanian government initiative, the Tanzania Spices trademark has a number of regulating bodies that provide guidelines, structure and management.

They are drawn from multiple parts of the spices supply chain including government, universities, producers, exporters, and the private sector. This ensures accurate and multi-faceted representation from all industry stakeholders.

The regulators manage both the top-level vision and direction of the label and its day-to-day operations, certification and monitoring.

Governance of the Tanzania Spices label

The Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) oversees the label, manages operations, and coordinates the nationwide process of issuing the label. TanTrade plans, coordinates and supervises all branding activities of Tanzanian products and services.

The Tanzania Spices label is one such initiative.

Governance of the label

The governance structure for the Tanzania Spices label has six major components:

TanTrade and its Director General (DG) oversees the label and establish an office to manage the label.

The Label Steering Committee is responsible for all policy matters. It consists of 12 members, all representatives of the spices’ subsector stakeholder organizations.

The Private Sector Working Group provides recommendations on the standards of using the label, to encourage wide participation while maintaining product quality. The Working Group consists of private sector individuals, including spice producers.

The Label Management Office manages the day-to-day operations of the label. It reports to the DG TanTrade and acts as Secretary to the Steering Committee.

Technical Committees provide policy and technical guidance to the Steering Committee and the Label Management Office. They operate as needed to audit control and compliance of standards before and after granting use of the label.

Other spices stakeholders including label users, provide feedback, ideas and funding.
