Makaru Agro
Makaru Agro Ltd. began with a simple goal: to help local farmers transition from fishing to growing high-value crops that could provide steady income. Starting with perishable vegetables like tomatoes, the company quickly realized the need to produce more sustainable crops. The breakthrough came with African bird eye chilies, a crop that grew remarkably well and became the focus of the company’s out-grower scheme. Launched in 2018, this program provided local farmers with quality seeds, training, and mentorship, empowering them to grow chilies for both domestic and international markets. By 2017, Makaru was successfully exporting its chilies to Kenya, marking the beginning of a journey into the global market.
Today, Makaru Agro sources chilies from farmers across Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, selling them to premium markets in Europe while also making them available to local consumers in smaller, affordable packages. The company’s commitment to quality, sustainable farming practices, and eco-friendly packaging reflects a broader mission: to support farmers, enhance their livelihoods, and share the unique, spicy flavors of Africa with the world. Makaru is not just a business; it’s a movement, telling the story of African farmers and their journey toward sustainable prosperity.
